Located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, the Borough of Flemington is part of the Amwell Valley, with northwest portions located on the Hunterdon Plateau. 

In 1756, Samuel Fleming purchased 210 acres of land and built his home in what was soon after known as "Fleming's Town".  Formed as a town in 1870 and later as a village in 1894, Flemington was ultimately incorporated as a Borough in 1910. Since 1785, Flemington has served as the County Seat of Hunterdon.

Flemington is home to a significant agricultural industry, with poultry and dairy farms among its top products. In 1856, the Hunterdon County Agricultural society held its first County (Flemington) Fair, one that is still held annually and now known as The Hunterdon County 4H and Agricultural Fair.

U.S. Route 202, Route 12 and Route 31 approach the Borough from the north, east and south respectively; providing easy access to points of interest throughout New Jersey and the metropolitan area.

Offering countless historic landmarks, 65% of the Borough is cited on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places. Its more high-profile landmarks include:

  • ·         The Union Hotel, an early 19th century inn located in Flemington’s downtown.
  • ·         The Hunterdon County Courthouse, the site of the infamous Charles Lindbergh baby-kidnapping trial.      
  • ·         Fleming Castle, Samuel Fleming’s house and the first built within the Borough.

Shopping and Dining

Flemington and its historic Victorian downtown cater to all interests, whether it’s antique shops, outlet shopping, golf, historic sites or art galleries; while Flemington’s restaurants offer a wide variety of delicious fare. Liberty Village Premium Outlets provide more than 40 retail outlet stores from which to hunt down bargains.


Flemington students are served by elementary public schools (K-4) schools such as Barley Sheaf School; Copper Hill School (in nearby Ringoes); Francis A. Desmares School; and Robert Hunter School.

Flemington fifth and sixth graders attend the Reading-Fleming Intermediate School in Flemington, while J. P. Case Middle School in Flemington serves Flemington students in seventh and eighth grades.

Students in grades 9 - 12 attend Hunterdon Central Regional High School. This district serves students in Delaware Township, East Amwell Township, Flemington Borough, Raritan Township and Readington Township.


Parks and Recreation

A variety of recreational opportunities are available in Flemington, whether you favor indoor training or outdoor fun. A small sampling includes the following:

·         Flemington Tennis Club – Along with three private Har-Tru clay tennis courts for members, the club offers adult and junior tennis lessons and clinics to members and non-members alike.

·         Paradise Golf Center – Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the driving range, miniature golf and lessons for all ages and skill levels.

          Shields Skate Park – A unique indoor skating facility located in a huge warehouse and geared to inline skaters, BMX bikers and razor scooters.
