The Commute

New Jersey Transit operates the No. 113, 114, & 117 bus lines to the Port Authority in Midtown. There are 22 buses between 5 and 9 a.m. that make only one other stop before going to New York. One-way trips take about 45 minutes.

The NJ Transit Train Station, on the New Jersey Transit Raritan Valley line, links New York-bound commuters to a transfer point at Newark’s Penn Station.

Eight trains make the 38- to 47-minute total trip to New York on weekdays from 5 to 9 a.m., and eight trains go to Union from 4 to 8 p.m.

 

The Township

The Township of Union is located on the northern-central edge of Union County and is bordered by eight municipalities.

Union Township is less than 20 miles west of Lower Manhattan. Interstate 78 and Route 22, a six-lane road lined with shopping for almost every conceivable need, run east and west and divide the township roughly into thirds. The Garden State Parkway runs north & south through the eastern end of town.

Morris Avenue is lined with an eclectic Jersey mix of diners, lumberyards, supermarkets and gas stations until it enters Union Center, the downtown area.  Here, Morris Avenue divides — the sidewalk is lined with flagpoles, each carrying an American flag — and to the right sits Town Hall, a colonial brick building with white columns.

 

The Schools

The system has six schools for pre-kindergarten through Grade 4, with the Jefferson School for Grade 5. Burnet and Kawameeh Middle Schools are for Grades 6, 7 and 8. Union High School has about 2,500 students enrolled in Grades 9 through 12.

 

What To Do

Route 22 has an abundance of choices, both for shopping and dining.  Every imaginable cuisine from fast food to gourmet dining is within easy reach.  The high-end Mall at Short Hills is about a 15-minute drive from the western edge. Many residents take advantage of Union’s proximity to New York to enjoy Broadway plays, concerts, museums, and eclectic dining.

By obtaining a Union VIP Card, residents can earn tax credits. The Property Tax Rewards program is a township-supported economic development program providing property tax credits as an incentive to residents for shopping locally.

The Farmers Market is dedicated to providing a place where local farmers, producers, artisans, and crafters provide value in good to the Township. It runs From June 20th to September 12 each Thursday from 3pm to 8pm in the parking lot in front of Town Hall.
