Millstone Township, NJ

Millstone Township is located in the southwestern section of Monmouth County; New Jersey’s “Shore Region” where gorgeous natural landscapes dot an area covering more than 37 square miles of rolling countryside.

Acres of farmland and orchards are still omnipresent in the Monmouth County area and play a significant role in the region’s economy. Nearly 500 trees are currently being grown at Halka Nurseries, a large tree farm in Millstone Township; these trees will be part of the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero.

Named after the Millstone River which originates there, Millstone Township was incorporated on February 28, 1844. It originally consisted of nine villages: Cars Tavern, Holmeson, Smithburg, Sweetman, Bergen Mills, Bairdsville, Stone Tavern, Clarksburg, and Perrineville. Today, Perrineville and Clarksburg are the two remaining communities from that group that comprise the Township.

During the American Revolutionary War, Millstone Township was the site of a secret post for the Continental army, a favored location due to its hilly terrain. General George Washington also used a local tavern as his outpost during the war.

Two buildings in Millstone Township are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Clarksburg Episcopal Methodist Church built in 1845 and the Clarksburg Schoolhouse, a four-room structure built in 1923 and presently serving as home for the Township’s municipal offices.
