North Plainfield is a Borough in Somerset County, New Jersey.  As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough population was 21,936, and has a total area of 2.8 square miles, all of it land.

North Plainfield, is mostly contained in Somerset county, but the northwest edge on the north side of US Hwy 22 is in Union county.  The town is bordered by Watchung to the north, Green Brook to the southwest, and Plainfield to the south. North Plainfield is in the northern division of the Raritan Valley along with Green Brook.

North Plainfield Township was created from portions of Warren Township, New Jersey by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1872.  The borough of North Plainfield became an independent municipality in 1885.

From its genesis as a planned neighborhood in the 1800s, North Plainfield has evolved into a pleasing residential community with considerable commercial activity.  Victorian mansions still grace the tree-lined streets of the Washington Park Historic District.  Housing options include fine older single-family homes and newer construction.

The North Plainfield School District, serves public school students in Pre-K through Grade 12.  The district also houses a comprehensive Adult High School and an Adult Community School which offers educational programs for North Plainfield and neighboring community residents. Schools in the district are East End (grades PreK-4), Stony Brook (grades K-4), West End (grades K-4), Somerset School (grades 5-6) and North Plainfield Middle School / North Plainfield High School (grades 7-12)

The central business district is utilizing a Main Street New Jersey grant to foster economic growth, while Route 22 offers a commercial corridor.  Just 23 miles from Manhattan, this small-town setting is convenient to Routes 22, 78, and 287. 

Green Acres parkland, sports and playground facilities, the 4H center, Vermeule Arts Center, and a senior center are highlights of this proud community. 

North Plainfield Farmers Market, located at corner of Somerset & Race Streets, North Plainfield (Across from Borough Hall), is open summer and fall Saturdays, 9am - 2pm.
