Prudential New Jersey Properties Joins Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Real Estate Brokerage Network

Regional brokerage leader to operate as Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New Jersey Properties

SOMERSET, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, the real estate brokerage network operated by HSF Affiliates LLC, today announced that Prudential New Jersey Properties has joined the network operating as Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New Jersey Properties. The regional brokerage leader adds to a growing roster of affiliates that have transitioned to the network since September. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices now counts more than 29,000 agents and 825 offices in 42 states.

As part of its transition, New Jersey Properties moved its Montclair office from Church Street to a new location at 695 Bloomfield Ave., one block from the Montclair Art Museum. Landscape artist Catherine Kinkade, a master pastelist, will help launch the gallery with a show of oils and plein air studies in pastel and pen and ink starting June 23.

              Branding Unveiled

Warren Buffett's new franchise network, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, today unveiled the branding the company hopes will be adopted by brokerages affiliated with Prudential Real Estate and Real Living. 

Buffett got into the franchising game in October, when HomeServices of America Inc. -- a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate that's the second-largest real estate brokerage in the nation -- acquired a majority interest in the Prudential Real Estate and Real Living brands from Brookfield Asset Management.

HomeServices and Brookfield formed a joint venture, HSF Affiliates LLC, which will roll out the new franchise brand later this year while continuing to operate the Real Living and Prudential Real Estate affiliate networks.

The brand "will be available in late 2013," the company said today. The Berkshire Hathaway name is front and center in the branding, and that's by design.

"The brand's strongest asset is the Berkshire Hathaway name itself," said Kevin Ostler, communications manager for HSF Affiliates LLC, HomeServices' new franchise wing.

The rich cabernet color, Ostler said, makes the brand stand out from the red-and-blue dominated branding of much of the real estate industry. It also gives distinction, he said. "It's the color of royalty."

Initial reactions to the cream and cabernet-colored branding were positive. Joel Burslem, partner at real estate design firm 1000watt Consulting, gave a thumbs up on Twitter.

How the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices brand will appear on marketing materials.

Chris Nichols, broker-owner of Orem, Utah-based Prudential Utah Elite Real Estate, was at Prudential Real Estate Sales Convention in Las Vegas where the new logo and identity were announced this morning. He said Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices was "excited for the new color and branding with a focus on the strength and integrity of the Berkshire Hathaway name."

In a video played as part of rollout of the branding, Nichols said Buffett expressed his confidence in real estate going forward.

Under the terms of the 2011 sale of the Prudential Real Estate brand to Brookfield Asset Management, the brand is slated to fade away when the last rights expire in the late 2020s.

All nine of the HomeServices-owned Prudential-branded brokerages are transitioning to the new branding, said Earl Lee, CEO of HSF Affiliates.

Warren Buffett Just Made A Huge Bet On The Housing Market

Perhaps the most bullish indicator for U.S. housing is Warren Buffett.

The legendary investor has been buying up real-estate brokerages around the country as he bets on a housing turnaround. Now, he is partnering with Brookfield Asset Management, a Canadian real-estate investor, to more than double the size of his brokerage business.

Bloomberg Businessweek's Noah Buhayar has the details:

Berkshire’s HomeServices of America Inc. unit will be the majority owner of the venture to manage a U.S. residential real-estate affiliate network, according to a statement on the new company’s website. The firms plan to offer a new franchise brand, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, starting next year. Brookfield’s network has operated under the Prudential Real Estate and Real Living Real Estate brands.

Berkshire’s managers have been positioning the firm to benefit as the U.S. home market recovers from its worst slump in seven decades. The Omaha, Nebraska-based company has bought a brickmaker, won the loan portfolio of bankrupt mortgage lender Residential Capital LLC at auction and built its HomeServices unit by agreeing to acquire real-estate brokerages in states including Oregon and Connecticut.

The press release says the brokerages that will make up the new company did a combined $72 billion in sales in 2011. That's more than twice the $32 billion in sales that Berkshire did in 2011 without the new brokerages.

Buffett has been public about his bullish housing call for a while as he's built his residential real-estate brokerage business, but this is a big addition.

     My name is Ilene. My husband and I just signed the contract for a new beautiful home in Warren, NJ that listed at $1,399,000 with the incredible help of John Circello.

  

  There are times when outstanding performance must be recognized and this is clearly one of them. As you were aware, acquiring this property was EXTREMELY difficult from many standpoints. First and foremost, the seller was also the listing agent for this property and was less than forthright. We were basically deceived throughout the process and ultimately had “ the rug pulled out” from underneath us with outrageous demands during the attorney review process, only to hold us in limbo long enough to find other buyers.

   

This did not deter John. During the whole process, his “calm and collected” style confronted the owner’s “sense of honor” on multiple occasions without ever alienating this person. He also did an excellent job of “not pushing” us into continuously raising our bid during attorney review but very professionally provided us with his opinion and allowed us make our own decisions. John comes across to clients as extremely competent, empathetic, passionately customer-focused and most importantly—authentic and genuine! He is a sincere pleasure to work with.
